First of all let me apologize for beeing absent for such a long time, I’ve been busy! Very busy. And on top of that I switched hosts, and my backup was corrupted  (ALWAYS CHECK YOUR BACKUPS!!!!!!), so I lost my uploads. This means that this website will no longer contain any pictures on content older than July 21th.

Here’s a quick headsup of my life in the last weeks:

• I went back to Belgium (sigh…)
• I graduated
• I have a new laptop (I know, AGAIN :’) )
• I passed my Microsoft 70-502 exam (WPF).
• I have a new phone, a T-Mobile G1 (again…)

I’ve been very busy on my internship report. It didn’t went too well, but I got some very good tips from a teacher (thanks).

I found something odd when writing a Java program yesterday.

In a JTable you have an int to display (the amount ordered e.g.), but when getting the value of a cell you obviously get an Object, not an int.

In order to get the Object into an int variable, you might experience this issue:

//this does not works (obviously)
int element = this.jTableProducts.getElementAt(4, 4);

//this works! (obviously, Integer is a subclass of Object)
Integer element = (Integer)this.jTableProducts.getElementAt(4, 4);

//this odly enough does not works
int element = (int)this.jTableProducts.getElementAt(4, 4);

//but this works
int element = (Integer)this.jTableProducts.getElementAt(4, 4);

This is due the autoboxing of Integer to int (and vice versa).

A while ago there was a request in the class to persons who want to participate in a .NET contest. Ofcourse Peter and I signed up.

Yesterday was the day of judgment. After waking up at 0500 I drove at 0545 to school, to pick up Peter at about 0620. At 0607 I arrived. Fortunately Peter was also on his way (he told me that he didn’t sleep that good the night before), and off we took, to Kontich, to the office of QFrame.

After driving an hour and 15 minutes we arrived at the building, at about 0730.

10 minutes later our teacher arrived, and the other students. At 0800 we entered the building, drank some coffee, and at 0835 the introduction started. We got the assignment and we started programming.

There was a small lunch at 1200 to 1230. I ate 2 sandwiches and we (Peter and I) were the first to go back for our laptop to continue the task, but we had to wait

We programmed our application until 1530, then we got an introduction to Extreme Programming.

At the same time we presented our programs to the jury (1 team at the time).

Finally they told us who the winners where. 3th place for another school. 2nd for the PHL, and 1st for the PHL (Peter and me).

So Peter & I won a BEAUTIFUL laptop, and the year price. But we gave that one to our teacher Mrs. Sporen!

After that we went bowling and eating, but that was just cool, but not too interesting to post on my blog

Kort berichtje.

Net de melding gehad dat ik ben geslaagd voor het 2de jaar Toegepaste Informatica op de PHL

Super!

Vandaag mochten we met de klas naar een seminarie van Visual Studio 2008, met daarin uitleg van de nieuwe features van de talen vooral.

Een aantal dingen die me zijn bijgebleven:

• Shitload aan nieuwe features
• XAML is prachtig
• LINQ is cool
• Automatic properties zijn handig!

Alleen was het zeer jammer dat ook de eerste jaars daar waren, omdat zij er niets van snapten van het code-gedeelte, en zij zorgden dan ook voor lawijt. Jammer.

Maar over het algemeen was het zeer geslaagd, en ben ik nog meer overtuigd van wat ik al wist: Microsoft is the way to go in de toekomst.

Op een dag hebt ge een sloot aan code, zo traag als wat. En dan wilt ge gaan controleren waar hij traag is.

Dus we gaan op zoek, Google: Visual Studio 2005 profile code. Leuk, ge moet de Team Edition hebben. En hoe moet ik daar nu aan geraken als zijnde student? MSDN subscription kopen? Sorry maar dat is me net wat te duur.

Ik vind het jammer, de Professional kost ~1000 euro / licentie, dus als ik deze na mijn studies zou aanschaffen, zou ik nog niet eens een profiler hebben. Hier slaat Microsoft toch een beetje de plank mis

Dadelijk eens mailen naar de MSDNAA-maintainer bij ons op school, eens zien of ik via dat systeem kan krijgen. Ook zou ik graag Visual Studio 2008 hebben, maar dat zal nog even duren eer we die kunnen krijgen.

Momenteel ben ik bezig aan een agenda-applicatie, die communiceert met een MySQL database via PHP, zodat ge de agenda overal kunt bekijken. Waarom niet via een online applicatie? Veiligheid, en het ziet er gewoon wat gelikter uit, die mooie venstertjes. Dat is iets waar .NET in uitblinkt, alles ziet er hetzelfde uit. Daar kunnen de devvers van WLM nog wat van leren, aangezien zij hun vensters er standaard anders laten uitzien.

Ik post straks even een tutorial over WLM, hoe dat ge alle vensters er hetzelfde kunt laten uitzien!
